What is an umbrella company?

At its core, an umbrella company is a business which employs people who work as contractors, allowing them to be compliant for tax and employment law purposes.

If you are a contractor, an umbrella company makes your Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and National Insurance deductions, ensuring that you pay the right amount to HMRC. It takes on the employer liability for you, and you provide services to FRS’s clients.

If you are thinking of providing services to a recruitment agency or end-client on a contract to contract basis, using an umbrella company such as FRS is the perfect way to reduce the burden of contracting.

Why should individual contractors use an umbrella service like FRS?

Using an umbrella company such as FRS gives a contractor legal employee status. FRS looks after all of the paperwork, providing you with a simple, safe and compliant way to contract and allowing you to get on with the job.

FRS takes care of all of your Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and National Insurance (NI) contributions, so there will be no unexpected tax bills and you also receive full employment rights.

Having full employment rights is important, as you will still have access to state benefits, such as state pension, statutory sick pay and maternity or paternity pay.

Using an umbrella company such as FRS will also provide you with record of continuous employment, helping with mortgage or loan applications. Our personal service also means that you will always be on the right tax code.

Quite simply, it is the easiest solution for contractors to be employed legally and to be tax compliant.

How does it work?

Very easily. You register with FRS as an employee under our umbrella and we look after you.

The agency you are providing services to will send FRS the contracted rate agreed. We will make all relevant deductions and we will then pay the net wage into your account through a highly secure transfer service. It’s a simple as that.

FRS will also text you the amount of pay you will be receiving and we’ll email your weekly payslips, showing all the relevant deductions and expenses. All of this is done safely and securely as we encrypt your payslips.
